Goals, Dreams, & the Impossible

by | Jan 6, 2021 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

My latest struggle is that it is the New Year and I am a goal-setting kinda gal. Which you may think goes hand in hand. Normally it does. (I may have a collection of spreadsheets with goals from past years. Yes, you can be an artist and love spreadsheets. Totally a thing, I promise.) This year is different. (The world is for sure, but I am referring to my little internal world.) I have that feeling one gets right before swinging for something big.

But what am I swinging at? I recently reviewed the application for a fellowship. I circled all the things I am not in the application. All things that I want to be as an artist if I was one of the cool kids. I am pushing myself to dream an impossible dream. The Savvy Painter podcast recently had a great conversation about that. Here’s a link if you want to listen.

It is hard to move towards a destination if you don’t know what it is. However, deep in my bones is the feeling that I can only develop this one as I go. Earlier today, words jumped off the page at me. They are “be mindful of your path.”

Mindfulness. Perhaps I don’t need all the answers to begin my plan. Perhaps I need circles on a page of things I recognize that I want to be and am not yet, the permission to dream up impossible goals, and the path of changing my mindset of what is possible.
