Creating a Value Scale

by | Sep 27, 2022 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

Creating a value scale is an essential and simple task for a painter. The basic idea is that we need to see the range of values that one or two pigments can create. Values are an important part of painting, creating contrast, mood, form, and help guide the eye. It is often (and correctly!) said that “Values do the work, color gets the credit.”

Value: How light or dark a pigment appears.

Value Scale: The range of a pigment hue from light to dark. Often the idea is to have 10 shades or tints shown.
